What to Know Before Booking a Bartender for Your Event

By Sierra Hooker, Owner & Lead Bartender at Tippin Tins

Planning a party, wedding, or celebration? You've probably got a Pinterest board full of florals, playlists half-built, and a guest list that keeps changing.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, you'll realize:

Wait. Who's going to handle the drinks?

And not just pour them but serve them safely, smoothly, and stylishly?

As someone who's been behind the bar for a lot of events (the fun, the chaotic, and everything in between), let me give you a few tips that'll help you feel confident about booking your bartender whether it's me or someone else.

1. Look for a Licensed & Insured Pro

This one isn't glamorous, but it's important. You always want to hire a bartender who:

  • Is properly licensed to serve alcohol

  • Carries liability insurance

  • Understands local/state laws (yes, even for backyard weddings)

It protects you, your guests, your venue, and your entire event from any legal or safety issues.

At Tippin Tins, we check all those boxes and then some.

2. Ask About Experience Not Just Drink Recipes

Anyone can mix a drink. But working a bar at an event? That's a whole different game.

You're looking for someone who can:

  • Handle a rush when 40 people show up at once

  • Manage a timeline (grand entrances, toasts, etc.)

  • Stay cool when it's 95° and the cooler's acting up

  • Read the room, connect with guests, and still keep it professional

Experience matters. It's what allows you to enjoy your night while we handle the flow, the vibe, and the occasional "Can I get something strong?" request with grace.

3. Decide If You Want Full-Service or Just a Bartender

This part trips people up a lot. Are you looking for:

  • Just someone to show up and serve what you provide?

  • Or a mobile bar service that brings everything, menu planning, mixers, garnishes, coolers, signage, even the bar setup?

Tippin Tins is full-service. We bring the whole experience including helping you decide what to serve, how much alcohol to buy (if you're providing it), and how to style the setup.

Know what you want and don't be afraid to ask for more if you need it.

4. Have a Plan for Alcohol

This is where things get technical but don't worry, I make it easy.

Here's what we help with:

  • Estimating how much beer, wine, and liquor you'll need for your guest count and event length

  • Helping you choose signature cocktails, mocktails, or themed drinks

  • Making sure we're within legal serving limits and venue rules

  • Working with your vendors (like caterers or planners) so we're all on the same page

You don't have to guess or Google formulas. We've done this a hundred times, and we're happy to walk you through it step-by-step.

5. The Vibe Matters (A Lot)

Bartenders are part of your guest experience. We're not hidden in a back room, we're front and center, interacting with your people, setting the tone, and keeping the energy high (or chill, depending on your vibe).

That means personality matters. Who's behind the bar can change the way your night feels.

At Tippin Tins, we believe in showing up with warmth, humor, professionalism, and just enough sparkle to make your night memorable for all the right reasons.

6. Don't Wait Too Long to Book

Mobile bars book fast especially for weddings, graduations, and peak seasons.

If you find a bartender or service that feels like the right fit, don't wait. You'll want time to plan your drink menu, work out logistics, and build a setup that feels right for your event.

The earlier we can start working together, the better the experience will be (for both of us!).

Here's the Bottom Line:

When it comes to bartending your event, you don't just want someone who knows how to make a drink, you want someone who knows how to make a night.

You deserve a bar experience that:

  • Feels personal

  • Runs smoothly

  • Reflects your style

  • And leaves your guests talking about it the next day

If that sounds like your kind of party, I'd love to be part of it.

Let's raise a glass to good planning and even better parties.
